5 FREE Anti-Virus programs for PC

In this, I reveal the five most widely used and respected Anti-Virus tools for your PC that are available for FREE.

There really should be no excuse for not having an anti-virus program installed on your Windows based PC, if you do not have an Anti-Virus program, do so at your own risk!

in this article, I have provided a round-up  of the best and most popular AV software currently available, so take your pick from any of the following. I would NOT advise installing more than one AV program on a Windows PC, as this may cause a software conflict and your PC will get bogged down and run much slower than it should.

1. Microsoft Security Essentials

Developed by Microsoft as a FREE tool to remove Viruses from their Windows operating systems, Microsoft Security Essentials is a great way to protect your Windows based PC for FREE. It’s available as a download from the Microsoft Website and works on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, 32 or 64 bit.

According to Microsoft:

Use Microsoft Security Essentials to help guard against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs.

Download it from: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download

Good user interface, easy to use, runs in background silently

Weak Malware protection, but there is Microsoft Anti-Malware for that added functionality. Something of a memory hog.

2. AVG FREE Edition 2014

Another popular Anti-Virus Tool is AVG, the name comes from Anti-Virus Grisoft, as it was developed by Grisoft, hence the name AVG.  The FREE versions is ideal if you don’t do online banking, but if you do online banking, then AVG recommend the full verions, which currently is £40.00. Personally, I think this is a bit steep for an Anti-Virus product, when you can download Microsoft Security Essentials for FREE.

Download AVG here from: http://free.avg.com/gb-en/free-antivirus-download

Good detection against viruses, fairly quick scan speed.

Again, weak malware protection, but either upgrade to paid AVG or use Microsoft Anti-Malware tool

AVAST has been around for some 25 years now, and it claims to be the most trusted AV software available.

I have personally not used AVAST, but I hear from a friend who uses it that it’s very good, but I’m hoping to test all of these AV programs in the near future to expand on this article.

AVAST also has a security suite available, including options that aren’t in the FREE version. The other packages in the suites that are available are the Internet Security Suite, and the Premier suite. See the AVAST website for a full comparison of different features in all versions here:

4.  ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus and FireWall

download (1)

ZoneAlarm is another program that has been around for years. ZoneAlarm first started out making a FireWall program for Windows in the days of Window 98/2000. I used to use this before modems came with a built-in firewall. Anyway, I digress, the emphasis now seems to be on Anti-Virus software rather than FireWalls.

5. Comodo Anti Virus

Comodo Avti Virus is another alternative in this round up. And it is an AV program that does actually feature anti-malware, so it gets a plus from us for that!
