Windows 8.1 has arrived and is available for update for Windows 8 users.

Windows 8 was a bold move by Microsoft to banish the famous Windows ‘Start’ button, first seen in Windows 95 (nearly 20 years ago) to the pages of history, but it’s back, kind of. Windows users have been so used to the Start button, that Windows 8 caused outrage among some long-time users that no doubt caused a slow uptake of the new OS. Windows 8.1 re-introduces the start button, but not as we know it.

According to Microsoft 8.1 is “Everything you already love, and a lot more”.

How to get the update.

If you have a computer already running Windows 8

If you have a computer already running Windows 8, then there should be a notification on the start page that there is a new version available for download.

If you have Windows 7

Download and run the Windows Upgrade assistant, from the Microsoft website, below is detailed info from Microsoft directly

To run Upgrade Assistant

  1. Click to download Upgrade Assistant.Depending on your Internet connection, it might take several minutes to install.
  2. When prompted by your browser, open, save or run the Upgrade Assistant program file. Any option will work, but if you choose Save, you might need to search for the file on your PC and double-click it to run it.
  3. Follow the on-screen steps. Upgrade Assistant scans your PC to make sure that it meets the system requirements. It also checks to see if your programs and devices are compatible with Windows 8.1.
  4. Here is a summary of the system requirements:
    • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
    • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
    • Free hard drive space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
    • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
